The President of the Ghana Esports Federation Igor Boumekpo was yesterday hosted by VGA Esports in an interview aimed at addressing key issues and providing clarity on the current state of the esports ecosystem in Ghana.
During the discussion, the President emphasized that esports is a broad and dynamic industry that extends far beyond the few visible activities currently taking place across the country. He stressed that sustainable esports development requires a strong foundation built on governance, regulatory compliance, policy development, athlete welfare, education, infrastructure, and long-term strategic planning.
Addressing misconceptions surrounding regulatory authority within the esports sector, the President stated that recognition as a governing body is not determined by who started first or who is most visible.
Regulatory authority does not depend on who came first. Recognition is a legal process, not a popularity contest.
He explained that the legitimacy of a national governing body is established through the appropriate legal and institutional recognition processes in accordance with national laws and regulatory frameworks, rather than through public perception or self-declaration.
The President also announced that the Ghana Esports Federation will soon introduce the National Esports Directive, a policy framework designed to guide the governance, regulation, and structured development of Esports across Ghana. The Directive is expected to establish clear standards and provide direction for stakeholders throughout the ecosystem.
In addition, he announced the upcoming launch of the National Esports Championship, which will serve as Ghana’s premier national esports competition. The Championship is intended to create a structured pathway for athlete development, regional participation, talent identification, and national team selection while promoting competitive excellence across the country.
The interview reaffirmed the Ghana Esports Federation’s commitment to building a transparent, accountable, and sustainable Esports ecosystem that serves the interests of athletes, clubs, organizers, publishers, and all stakeholders.
The Federation remains dedicated to working with relevant institutions and industry partners to ensure that esports in Ghana continues to develop on a solid legal and governance foundation that will benefit both current and future generations.
