Cheetah FC Launches Phygital Football Team Ahead of GESF Phygital Rivals 2026

Ahead of the 4th Edition of the Ghana Esports Federation (GESF) Phygital Football tournament scheduled for 14 November 2026 in Weija, Cheetah FC, a second-division football club, has taken a major step into the future of sports by establishing its own Phygital Football team.

Phygital Sport is the combination of physical sports and digital Sports (esports,) bringing both worlds together in one competitive experience. In Phygital Sport, athletes or teams compete in both a digital gaming environment and a real physical sporting environment. The combined performance determines the overall result.

  •  EA SPORTS FC +  Physical Football = Phygital Football
  •  NBA 2K +  Physical Basketball = Phygital Basketball
  •  Digital Dance +  Physical Dance = Phygital Dancing

Phygital Sport creates a new generation of athletes who can participate in both esports and traditional sports, connecting gaming, technology, fitness, teamwork and competitive sport.

Phygital Football is played in two parts:

  1. Digital Football The team first plays EA SPORTS FC on PlayStation.
  2. Physical Football The same team then plays a real football match on the pitch.

The results from the digital match and physical match are combined according to the competition’s official scoring rules. The team with the better overall performance wins.

That is what makes it Phygital Football—it connects esports and traditional football in one competition, rather than treating them as two separate tournaments.

To identify the best players, Cheetah FC organized an EA FC 26 scouting tournament featuring 16 participants at the Madagastar Esports Arena, West Hills Mall. The top-performing players will have the opportunity to sign with Cheetah FC and form part of the club’s new Phygital Football team.

Cheetah FC already has a football team and beach soccer team and now becomes one of the first clubs embracing the emerging Phygital sports movement.

Speaking about the initiative, the President of Cheetah FC Abdul-Hayye Yartey said the club chose competitive scouting as the best way to identify players based on talent and performance. He described Phygital sports as a new and exciting dimension of competition that brings the physical and digital worlds together.

The President of the Ghana Esports Federation, Igor Boumekpo, welcomed the initiative and called on football and other sports clubs across Ghana to begin exploring Phygital teams in disciplines including football, basketball and other sports. The future of sport is not only physical or digital. The future is both.

The GESF believes the partnership between traditional sports and esports can create new opportunities for athletes, clubs and young people while opening a new pathway for Ghanaian sports development.
